Overview
We were contacted by a homeowner in East Sussex, who had concerns about a large mature oak tree growing close to the boundary of their property and overhanging the public pavement and road. The tree had grown significantly over the past 10 years, causing:
- Blocked light to upstairs windows
- Safety concerns about overhanging limbs above a public walkway
- Deadwood falling during high winds
The client wanted to retain the tree but ensure it was safe, well-maintained, and no longer causing disruption.
Initial Assessment
Our team conducted a full site visit to:
- Assess the health and structural integrity of the oak
- Identify dead, crossing or hazardous limbs
- Ensure the tree was not subject to a Tree Preservation Order (TPO)
- Carry out a risk assessment for public access and street proximity
The tree was not protected under a TPO, and we proceeded with a plan for selective crown reduction and targeted deadwood removal.
Work Undertaken
Traffic & Public Safety Measures
- Temporary pedestrian and traffic management was put in place using cones and signage
- Work was scheduled during low-traffic hours to minimise disruption
- Our team maintained constant ground-level monitoring for public safety
Crown Reduction (Approx. 20%)
We carried out a sympathetic reduction of the crown by approximately 20% to:
- Reduce end weight and canopy spread
- Improve natural light to the property
- Maintain the natural shape and form of the tree
All cuts were made to growth points, following BS3998 (Tree Work – Recommendations)
Deadwood Removal
- Several minor dead limbs and stubs were removed from the mid and upper canopy
- Cavity-prone areas were cleared to reduce the risk of decay and limb failure
Waste Management
- All cuttings were removed from site and 100% recycled as mulch and biomass
- The work area was left tidy, clear and safe
Outcome
The client was extremely satisfied with the outcome:
- The tree retained its natural shape and character
- Light levels in the property improved significantly
- The tree now poses less risk to passers-by or vehicles
- Feedback from neighbours and passers-by was very positive
The homeowner also booked us in to carry out annual inspections and light maintenance going forward.
